Money laundering?

i have a friend who was wrongly tricked into money laundering, he was trying to help afriend thinking that what he was doing was not illegal, he was just transfering a cheque because his friend had told him they didnt have a bank account, anyway he has never ever been in trouble with the police before, he has the court case coming up soon and he is woried about what will happen, is he likely to go to prison?
