Credit deny?

Hi i just tried to apply for bank of america student platinum credit card and i was denied and they said the reason was it said i have current or past delinquency, derogatory public record, or collection account appearing on my credit file. I have never apply for credit or anything before and this is my first time doing it so how can all of this be on my file when i have never even apply for credit at all? does this mean someone has stolen my identity? I just turn 18 and im still new to this whole credit thing and i dont know what to do. i havent even start off and i have bad credit what can i do?
